Ankle Distraction for Treatment of Post-Traumatic Arthritis

Doctor: S. Robert Rozbruch

Patient: Romano

Romano developed painful ankle arthritis years after trauma. X-rays show loss of all cartilage but he had ankle motion that was worth preserving. Romano underwent ankle distraction in 2006. Romano has significant improvement in his pain and joint space 6 years later. He has not required more surgery and is very satisfied with the outcome.

Pre-Op: Romano developed painful ankle arthritis years after trauma. X-rays show loss of all cartilage but he had ankle motion that was worth preserving.

Post-Op: Romano underwent ankle distraction in 2006. The fixator created space in the ankle for cartilage regeneration and continued motion.

Follow Up: Romano has significant improvement in his pain and joint space 6 years later. He has not required more surgery and is very satisfied with the outcome. He has maintained his ankle motion and has avoided ankle fusion or replacement.
